Fall of the USSR

The Soviet Union start to fall by the end on 1980’s and it completely disintegrated into 15 independent states on December 25, 1991. This event occurs at the end on the cold war.


After the death of the president Leonid Brezhnev in 1982, a new president called Mikhail Gorbachev was elected General Secretary of the Soviet Union in 1985. As Gorbachev saw that the economy was in very bad state, he try to apply his ideas for the development of the USSR. He try to reform the economy and modernize the political situation in the country.

Even when Gorbachev give freedom of speech to the USSR come of their states demand total independece.

Also another important cause of the collapse of the Soviet Union was when USSR tried to intervened in Afghanistan, causing a fight with them and the USA.

Mikhail Gorbachev leaves the government in 1991 and Boris Yeltsin became the first President of Russia.
